If\u00a0Canadian bombshell Daria Werbowy has turned a story on\u00a0fashion into a pictorial page-turner, then it\u2019s (fashion) editorial.\u00a0Now, set aside Vogue and pick up a copy of Newsweek. The\u00a0Citibank ad with all the smiling, happy customers in it is\u00a0\u201ccommercial\u201d. The distinction between the three really is\u00a0complex.
\nThe Formal Definitions:\u00a0\u201cFashion\u201d means things related to clothing, accessories and\u00a0beauty products. \u201cCommercial\u201d means \u201cthings done to promote a\u00a0company or product.\u201d \u201cEditorial\u201d means things done to support\u00a0an article or story in a magazine or book. \u201cEditorial\u201d can be about\u00a0more than \u201cfashion,\u201d although in modeling usually \u201ceditorial\u201d is\u00a0short for \u201ceditorial fashion\u201d.\u00a0In Practice:\u00a0\u201cCommercial\u201d can also be about fashion (they sell the clothes\u00a0by advertising). \u201cEditorial Fashion Agencies\u201d usually consider\u00a0showroom and catalog work as \u201ccommercial;\u201d \u201cCommercial Print\u00a0Agencies\u201d consider such work \u201cfashion,\u201d even though its intent is\u00a0commercial. All this interlocking of terms is enough to make\u00a0your head hurt, and the words are used differently depending on\u00a0who is doing the using.\u00a0For people whose experience is in advertising but not
\nfashion, \u201ccommercial\u201d models are the people you see in ads for\u00a0banks, autos, pharmaceuticals and all of the many other products\u00a0and services that people are used to advertise. We will treat\u00a0\u201ccommercial\u201d in the latter sense, because agencies are aligned that\u00a0way. An \u201ceditorial fashion\u201d agency is very likely to have some\u00a0\u201ccommercial\u201d girls under contract, but they will be very different\u00a0from what a commercial print agency thinks of as a \u201ccommercial\u00a0model\u201d.\u00a0Fashion models also work as commercial models, although\u00a0the reverse is rarely true.
