Editorial Fashion Models
\n\u201cEditorial fashion models\u201d are the stuff dreams are made of.\u00a0These are the \u201chigh end\u201d models who appear in the big-name
\nfashion magazines and in top-quality clothing and beauty product\u00a0advertising. Daria Werbowy and Diana Dondoe were among the\u00a0top names in 2005; Gisele Bundchen has been the closest thing to\u00a0a new \u201csupermodel\u201d since the beginning of this century. Runway\u00a0models may double as editorial models, but often they are in a\u00a0separate division within a fashion agency. But there are other\u00a0types of fashion model as well, some that most people have never\u00a0heard of.
\n«Editorial fashion models» work in New York City (in this\u00a0country) for the simple reason that relatively little editorial\u00a0fashion work is booked out of anywhere else. There are\u00a0exceptions, of course: Miami in winter (but often using New\u00a0York models), and sometimes Los Angeles or Chicago, but these\u00a0are just that: exceptions. If you want to be an editorial fashion\u00a0model, you go to New York. There are lots of opportunities\u00a0abroad as well (Paris, London, Milan, Tokyo . . .), but only one\u00a0strong editorial fashion market city in the US.
\nIf you are a female and want to be seen on the cover of a\u00a0national fashion magazine, sign a lucrative national ad contract,
\nbecome a «supermodel», or even be a «fashion model», you need\u00a0the following when you start:
\n1. Be between 14-19 years old. (Yes, they start that young.)
\n2. Be between 5’9″ and 6′ tall with long legs.
\n3. Be thin. Really, really thin. Something like 105-115\u00a0pounds.
\n4. Don’t have especially large breasts (34C is generally the\u00a0upper bound of acceptable, and 34B is preferred), or lots of\u00a0stretch marks, tattoos, piercing or highly tanned skin. Dark\u00a0skin is fine, lots of tan is not fine (except in Miami, which is\u00a0a whole different world).
\n5. Be beautiful. Not necessarily pretty, but beautiful. An\u00a0interesting, beautiful face is at least as good for a fashion\u00a0model as is an «all American» look.
\n6. Have the right personality: a strong commitment to\u00a0modeling (not just an interest in it), an ability to take\u00a0rejection (something most beautiful girls aren’t good at), a\u00a0thick skin, not a lot of modesty (nobody cares what you\u00a0don’t want someone to see, we have a fashion show to put\u00a0on . . .) and a lot of self confidence.
\n7. Be willing to relocate to a major market, with New York\u00a0City strongly preferred.
\n8. Be willing to travel to strange locations with no friends\u00a0there to support you, little money and little help, lots of\u00a0opportunity for both good and bad things to happen to you.\u00a0If you are a male and want to be a fashion model, you need to\u00a0start relatively young (18-25 or so), be six feet tall and wear a size\u00a040 regular suit with a slim (32 inch) waist and a 34 inch inseam\u00a0(all give or take an inch). You also need the personality and\u00a0availability traits of the female fashion models.\u00a0If you have all of that, you are a very, very rare person, and\u00a0you have one chance in a hundred of becoming an editorial\u00a0fashion model. No more than that. If you are anything else, you\u00a0need to think about some other kind of modeling.\u00a0Fashion modeling is usually a full-time job. You may have a\u00a0part-time job for a while, but if you achieve any success, that job\u00a0has to go. The way the agencies work, you don\u2019t have time to do\u00a0anything else.
