Other\u00a0than referrals from model agencies, you can find photographers\u00a0through ads in photography, modeling or acting trade journals (or\u00a0their websites). Choosing a Photographer
\n\u201cChoosing\u201d isn\u2019t the same as \u201cfinding.\u201d Attractive women\u00a0generally can find photographers to work with, and may find good\u00a0ones at little cost. Other types of models are more likely to have\u00a0to pay for good shoots, but should be able to find interested\u00a0photographers. But not all photographers who are interested in\u00a0shooting you (paid or not) should be chosen. These pictures are\u00a0for you, and you need to be sure the team you choose is likely to\u00a0get you what you need. Many photographers can\u2019t, or won\u2019t.<\/p>\n
Your first problem is to assess the photographer\u2019s style:
\n1. Fashion photographers shoot people all the time, but they\u00a0shoot \u201cfashion style\u201d \u2013 which may be entirely different from\u00a0what you need if you aren\u2019t a fashion model.
\n2. Most commercial photographers don\u2019t often shoot models at\u00a0all; they spend a lot more time on product shots. Those that\u00a0do shoot a lot of model photography are likely the best\u00a0choice for commercial and \u201cfashion print\u201d models, but not\u00a0for editorial fashion models.
\n3. Glamour photographers shoot people constantly, but\u00a0\u201cglamour style\u201d is inappropriate for most professional\u00a0mainstream modeling, and most of them don\u2019t know how to\u00a0do fashion or commercial\/lifestyle shots.
\n4. Portrait and wedding photographers are rarely good\u00a0choices. They may be very good at what they do, but what\u00a0is customary and expected in their business is very different\u00a0from what a professional model\u2019s shots need to look like.
\n5. Specialty photo shops like \u201cGlamour Shots\u201d produce fun\u00a0souvenirs, but they aren\u2019t likely to get you what you need\u00a0for your book.
\n6. Art photographers may produce beautiful work, but unless\u00a0you are an artists\u2019 model (or, rarely, a fashion model) what\u00a0they do won\u2019t do you any professional good.
\n7. \u201cTest Photographers\u201d specialize in shooting specifically for\u00a0a model\u2019s portfolio. Some of them make their sole living at\u00a0it. Good ones are likely to be the best affordable choice you\u00a0can make. Sadly, not all of them are good at it, and not all\u00a0are good at both fashion and commercial styles.\u00a0All of this puts a burden on you to know what professional\u00a0modeling pictures in your specialty look like. Most people don\u2019t,\u00a0and that accounts for all the horribly inappropriate pictures that\u00a0aspiring models bring into agency offices. If you can\u2019t tell the\u00a0difference, one approach is to seek out a family member or friend\u00a0who knows these kinds of people who can give you some advice.\u00a0Another approach is to go to one of the better mainstream\u00a0modeling forums on the Internet and ask those kinds of questions.\u00a0At least some of the people there ought to be able to help. If all\u00a0else fails, buy some magazines and look carefully at the way\u00a0models like you are portrayed in fashion (if you are a fashion\u00a0model) or print ads.
